[No Root]: How To Apply Themes On Android 8 Oreo.

Android amongst other OS takes the lead today because of the high level of customization it offers, you can change your Android to anything you want it to be either by getting your phone rooted or without rooting it. However, if you root access on your device, then that makes it more easier and you can have access to all the features Android can provide for you.

The most common thing Android users do on their smartphone is taking camera and when he comes to rooted phones then it is installing themes, And thus, that is where Substratum comes in. Substratum has proven to be the best way to theme up your device. Sadly, for Android Oreo, it requires root access. Well, you have nothing to worry about, if your Android is running on the latest OS, but you don’t want to root your device yet, read on, as we show you how to install themes on Android Oreo without rooting your device:

Install Theme on your Android 8 Oreo Without Root Access:
Note: Following this method will require installing Minimal ADB and Fastboot drivers on your device. I tried the following method on my Pixel phone, but I guess this method should work fine on any device running Android Oreo.

  • To begin with, navigate to your phone Settings => System => Developer Options, and enable USB Debugging.

  • Next, download and install Substratum from the Google play store, hence it's a free to download app.

  • Now, download Andromeda app on your phone, this app is sold at $2.49 in Google play store.

  • If you already have the both apps installed on your device, then firstly launch your Andromeda app and check your status "it should be disconnected."

  • Connect your Android phone to your PC and run the file "start_andromeda.bat", a new command prompt window will open, asking you to continue "press any key to continue with the setup".

  • Once the setup has been completed, the Command Prompt window will close automatically, and Substratum will start up on your device simultaneously.

Note: In some cases, the Substratum app may not open up automatically. To ensure that the setup was completed successfully, simply open up the Andromeda app on your device to see the connection status. If it reads “Connected” then you’re good to go and can start Substratum on your own.

Now, install your preferred theme from Google play store "but that is if Substratum is already installed on your device". For me, I applied the Dark Theme on my Pixel running Android 8.0 Oreo.

Once you're through, launch Substratum app, choose the theme and apply all the toggles you wish to, and tap on “Build & Enable”. And that’s it, your theme will be applied.

Note: Once you reboot your phone, it comes back to normal theme, this is so because the permission that were have an Substratum app via Andromeda will be revoked. Hence, if you wish to continue using the Substratum theme again then you need to grant permission again via Andromeda desktop client on your PC.
